While the 'City of Joy' Kolkata has emerged as the most expensive amongst India's top cities, the TripAdvisor TripIndex ranks Ahmedabad as the most pocket-friendly city for travellers.
Nikhil Ganju, country manager, TripAdvisor India said that the TripIndes is an useful reference for travellers to plan their trip budgets.
According to the index, an evening in Ahmedabad for two would approximately cost Rs 6406 including a four-star hotel room, which is around Rs 3709 cheaper than Kolkata.
In Ahmedabad one night accomodation at a four-star property would roughly cost around Rs 5503 (slightly more expensive than Pune, but much less compared to cities), a taxi ride for four km would cost around Rs 150, dinner for two at a mid-ranged restaurant would cost around Rs 593 while two pints of beer would come for Rs 160. Travellers need to dish out 4.5 times more money for a dinner for two in New Delhi (Rs 2767) as against a meal in Ahmedabad (Rs 593).
The index mentions that dinner cost in Ahmedabad does not include alcohol which is not served at the city restaurants, however, interestingly the same index provides for the price of beer.
Mumbai is the costliest when it comes to hotel accommodation (Rs 7580 per night), followed closely by Kolkata (Rs 7147 per night). Ahmedabad and Pune emerge as the most pocket-friendly when it comes to hotel rates, and other recreational costs.
TripAdvisor TripIndex 2013 further claims that hotel room rates have declined across the board in all cities with an average of 17 per cent drop from last year.
Chennai which had the most expensive hotel room last year saw the biggest fall of 27 per cent in room rate this year.
Ganju claimed that according to the comScore Media Metrix TripAdvisor is the world's largest travel site.
It has 200 million unique monthly visitors per month and hosts over 100 million reviews.
TripAdvisor entered India around five years back in August 2008, and currently India ranks fifth worldwide for TripAdvisor in terms of traffic only after the US, UK, China and France.
"Penetration of online booking in India is around 36 per cent. About half of all air travel bookings happen online, while for hotels the online share is still low at 10-12 per cent of total bookings," he added.
