But many others said the man, Kenny Bethel, is harmless and could be allowed to stay at Palmetto Golf Course. |
The 55-year-old Bethel, first showed up at the golf course after he ran away from home in 1963. He collected and resold stray golf balls, used the club's showers and toilets at night and slept in a sheltered area on the course that housed the showers. |
For the last nine years, he had been joined by his wife Francis, 43. After being evicted from the course, he has relocated to a space under a nearby bridge. Bethel had once turned down a job on course maintenance because he wanted to be self-employed. |
YOUTH POWER |
Fourteen-year-old Michelle Wie will play in the first full field event of the 2004 US PGA Tour, as she tees up on a sponsor's exemption at the Sony Open. |
That will make her the youngest woman to play in a PGA Tour event. Wie failed in two previous attempts to qualify for the tournament. |
Last year Wie played in nine professional tournaments, including two against the men in the Nationwide Tour's Boise Open and Canadian Tour's Bay Mills Open and missed the cut in both. |
She also played seven LPGA events with the best finish being a ninth place in Kraft Nabisco Championships. |
EARLY SEASON FOR MONTY |
Colin Montgomerie seeking his first title in Europe in more than 14 months has decided to start earlier than usual this season. The reason being this is the Ryder Cup year he thinks it is very special. |
The seven-time European number one wants to book himself an automatic berth on the European team to take on the US at Oakland Hills from September 17 to 19. |
So, instead of starting his playing schedule from March in the high-profile Dubai Desert Classic, Montgomerie will be teeing off at this week's South African Open, the European Tour's first event of the year. |
Last year his only title was the Macau Open on the Asian PGA, where he was a special invitee. - Bogeyman |
