was in Delhi recently to promote Maishaa as the official bed linen of the New York Fashion Week, an event that she has been organising for many years now. She spoke to Archana Jahagirdar about fashion, in general, and Indian design, in particular.
What does it mean when you give a bed linen brand the title of being the official bed linen for the fashion week?
The word official is the vocabulary of these kinds of deals. India is one of the most exciting places to be in at the moment. The IMG team in India right now has the mandate to find new ideas here and Maishaa wanted to upgrade bed linen to bed fashion.
Define what would be fashion's connect with bed linen?
Fashion life crosses all the dimensions. Fashion and style are inter-related. For me, its never been that you can be a fashionable person and live in a tacky home or vice versa. It is all connected.
Will the models be wearing Maishaa bed linen when they walk on the runway during this fashion week?
The ramp will continue to keep its focus on clothes otherwise it can become a circus. But what this deal will do for Maishaa is that we will create opportunities for designers to create designs for Maishaa and Maishaa will be able to access the latest fashion trends.
What would you say is the greatest strength of the New York Fashion Week?
The underlying strength of any fashion week is the talent that the week showcases. New York is a gateway to business opportunity. If, as they say, you can make it in New York, you can make it anywhere.
Though the week started as a platform for American designers, New York is a global city, English is just one of the languages that you hear in New York.
So the week showcases designers from all over the world. The New York Fashion Week also has the expertise of IMG behind it. The 60-70 designers that show in the tent at the event get the best lights, sound and the best production quality behind it. The designers can concentrate on just designing their collections.
Indian designers have showed at the New York Fashion Week. How would you rate Indian fashion?
I think the ball is in the court of the Indian designers. I wouldn't be coming here so regularly if I did not believe that there is talent here.
