Mexican golfer Lorena Ochoa had a double celebration last week. Just a few hours after learning her brother Alejandro had scaled the Mount Everest, Lorena went to complete her final round at the Franklin American Mortgage Championships and win her first-ever LPGA title.

The 22-year-old Lorena finished tied second a week earlier at the Michelon Ultra Classic. Lorena, who hails from Guadalajara, Mexico turned pro in 2002 and won the Rookie of the Year title with eight top tens and missed just one cut in 24 starts. She was ninth overall in the Money List. This year, she has had five top tens in six starts and then she broke through for her first win.

Testing times

As Colin Montgomerie (Monty)plays at Deutsche Bank-SAP Open this week, he knows he needs to do well not just here but also perform well at Volvo PGA the week after to stay in the world's top 50 to qualify for the US Open.

Montgomerie, who has just separated from his wife, Eimear, to whom he was married for 14 years has taken the blow bravely. The seven-time European No 1 Montgomerie is currently ranked 50th in the world and cannot afford to drop even one spot.

The US Open, the second of the year's four majors, will be played at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Southampton, New York, from June 17 to 20.

Harrington to skip Volvo PGA

For the second year in a row, Ireland's Padraig Harrington will skip the Volvo PGA Championship at Wentworth.

The reason: he does not want a bad performance to affect his confidence in the build-up to the US Open in June. This week, the 32-year-old player is defending his title at the Deutsche Bank-SAP Open in Europe.

Lightning kills golfer

A golfer was hit by a bolt of lightning in Fort Myers in the US as he was about to drive from the seventh tee in the afternoon at the Heritage Palms Golf and Country Club.

The victim was struck in the abdomen and had an exit wound near his right ankle. His playing partners tried to revive the victim but were unable to get the man's heart restarted.
