Filmmaker Yash Chopra passes away

Filmmaker Yash Chopra, known for directing and producing some of the greatest romantic films in Bollywoods, passed away on Sunday. He was 80.

The director, producer and screenwriter was admitted at Mumbai’s Lilavati Hospital on October 13 after he was diagnosed with dengue.

Born in Lahore on September 27, 1932, Chopra began his career as an assistant director to I S Johar and his elder brother, B R Chopra.

The creator of brand Yash Raj Films, or YRF as it is popularly known, has given some of the most memorable love stories to the movie lovers. In the past few months, he had been busy directing Jab Tak Hai Jaan, which was to be the comeback movie of the veteran after an eight-year break.

This was after 8 years that the veteran was himself directing a film. The last film he directed was Shah Rukh Khan starrer Veer Zara.

During his 53-year long film-making career, Chopra made over 50 films. He was the recipient of six National Film awards, 11 Filmfare Awards (including 4 for best direction), Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2011, Padma Bhushan in 2005.

Born in Lahore on September 27, 1932, Chopra began his career as an assistant director to I.S. Johar and his elder brother, B.R. Chopra.

He made his directorial debut with Dhool Ka Phool in 1959 and founded YRF in 1971. He also delved into TV production with YRF TV, which produced shows for Sony Entertainment Television, and later a seperate youth films division. Chopra leaves behind wife Pamela and two sons, Aditya and Uday, apart from a rich legacy in the Indian film industry.
