Tata Engineering is going green with the launch of its Indica CNG, which has just been launched in Delhi. Mumbai will follow soon. The Indica CNG will be available in two models standard and air-conditioned.
The CNG kits, imported from Lando Renzi of Italy, are directly fitted onto the cars on the factory assembly line. According to the manufacturer, the CNG version of the Indica meets standards prescribed by the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI).
Tata Engineering claims that the Indica boasts the largest capacity CNG tanks 72 litres as compared to 65 litres in the Omni and the Ambassador. There are two tanks of 50 and 22 litres each in the Indica, with one in the hatch and the other below the floor, and together, they can be filled with 12 kg of CNG.

Tata says that the Indica can give a range of 200 km with full tanks, or offer 17 to 18 km per kg of CNG. There is also a five litre petrol tank for emergencies.
Tata is betting on taxi operators to go in droves for the Indica CNG. As running costs are one-third that of petrol, the car proves to be economical for the business. Also, with its better range, the driver of the Indica would visit the CNG filling station less frequently. The Indica is priced at Rs 3,29,000 for the non-AC option, and Rs 3,49,000 for the factory-fitted AC option, both prices ex-showroom Delhi.
