SHATRANJ KE KHILARI
The chess set was as integral to the narrative as the two nobles playing mind games with each other. The film's producer Suresh Jindal recalls the history of the set used in the film: "It was a pure-carved ivory chess set dating back to the 17th/18th century. We had borrowed it from ad-man Bal Mundkur, who had a huge collection of chess sets. People at that time would go out of the way to help Satyajit Ray, being the towering personality that he was.And since he had a background in advertising, he knew of Mundkur's collection. We returned the set after the shoot; it was very expensive. Today the piece must be valued at several lakhs."
