Over the years, I have seen a number of press meets and photo-ops for various groups of motorcyclists who were leaving for their annual ride to the Himalayas, or to the world's highest motorable road at Khardung La. And at the end of it, I failed to understand what it is about a ride to the Himalayas "" why do scores of motorcyclists make it an annual pilgrimage? |
Having wondered enough, last month, I finally took part in the Himalayan Odyssey "" Royal Enfield's annual ride to Khardung La "" to find out how big the Himalayas really were. |

Preparations for such a long ride is very essential. Proper riding gear, rain gear, a well-built helmet and basic spares for the motorcycle, oh, and of course a well-maintained motorcycle will make the trip a tad easier. |

Get used to the motorcycle you're riding before you get to the mountains. The roads are broken in many places and do not exist in many more, but don't let that intimidate you. Just keep the ride simple. The only thing to keep in mind is that the faster you ride, the less you get to see. And boy, you really don't want to miss the colossal sights and silent sounds the mountains have to offer. |
|
Plan your night halts beforehand as there are just a few tents at some places and they can get booked really fast. If you are forced to take a halt and are unable to find accommodation, approach an army camp. |

They're always willing to help out. And yes, do read up on AMS or acute mountain sickness "" it's not the best of ailments to have, especially not when you're on a motorcycle, and it can be lethal. |

Camera film and batteries aren't easily available after Manali and with the indescribable scenery, you don't want to run out of them. The ride is easy, it's fun and it's addictive. It will make you go back again. And remember, it's the world's highest motorable road, definitely not the toughest. See you there next year! joshua.crasto@business-standard.com |
