This 260-year old city is absolutely charming and bustling with life, and will make you want to hop in your car on a weekend and come back to discover more.

It was India's first modern city, built in accordance with the Shilpa Shastra, and is structured in a nine-grid plan. Have a leisurely walk around the city and take in the Sisodia Palace, the Hawa Mahal, the Jantar Mantar observatory and the Amber Fort.

Apart from these, there are plenty of interesting bazaars in the walled city, with shopping bargains to be had.

Jaipur is 258 km from Delhi along the fast, well-maintained NH8. It's best to go in winter (October to March), although very good deals are available in summer, when it's boiling hot!

Rajasthan Tourism's Hotel Gangaur (Ph: 0141 2371641) is a good budget bet at Rs 700 onwards. Pricier accommodation is available at Raj Mahal Palace Hotel (Ph: 0141 2383260) at Rs 1,900 onwards and at Oberoi Rajvilas (Ph: 0141 2680101) at Rs 12,200 (!!!) onwards.
