Former Open champion Tom Lehman succeeds Hal Sutton as the American captain for the first-ever Ryder Cup match to be held in Ireland in September 2006. The 45-year-old player's appointment is a surprise as his involvement in the 1999 Ryder Cup, held in Boston, ended in a controversy.

Sam Torrance, Europe's vice-captain at that time, described in his autobiography as "the most disgraceful and disgusting day in the history of professional golf" and said "some of the American players, most notably Lehman, acted like mad men."

Having beaten Lee Westwood in the opening singles, Lehman was standing by the 17th green when Justin Leonard sank a mammoth 45-foot putt in his match against Jose Maria Olazabal.

Lehman and others reacted as if America had already won the Cup and charged on to the green to congratulate Leonard, ignoring the fact Olazabal still had a putt to keep the match alive.

Annika's feat

Annika Sörenstam matched Laura Davies' LPGA Tour record for consecutive wins in a tournament when she secured her fourth straight victory in the LPGA's Mizuno Classic.

The nine-stroke win was her seventh title this year and her 55th overall. Davies was the first player to win the same event four times when she won the Standard Register Ping 1994 to 1997.

Pavin's wish

The 1995 US Open champion Corey Pavin wanted to win the inaugural Carlsberg Masters 2004 in Vietnam for his wife, Lisa, who is Vietnamese. Nicknamed "The Bulldog', Pavin ended fourth. "It's always fun for me to go to a new place and many of you know that my wife Lisa is a Vietnamese.

It is a great opportunity for us to come here and play in this tournament and after this, we'll tour the country for 10 days," said the 44-year-old player. He did not win "" but he did take a holiday.

Harper dies at 90

The 1950 PGA Champion, Chandler Harper, died last week. He was 90. In the fifties, the PGA Championships were contested in match play and Harper won 10 other PGA Tour titles and finished second on seven occasions.

He was elected to the PGA America Hall of Fame in 1968. He once held the putting record, needing just 20 in shooting a third-round 63 as he won the 1950 Tucson Open.
