WHICH CAR?

Me (19 years old) and my father (47) are car lovers. We presently have a Qualis and want to trade it in for an SUV. I am interested in the Ford Endeavour but my father is looking at a Hyundai Terracan. Most of our driving will be in the city, but during vacations we go for long Himalayan trips (like the last trip to Leh via Srinagar and back through the Manali route).

We need a comfortable, economical, tough SUV which should be a maintenance free companion for the next 6-7 years. Terracan or Endeavour, which one is a better value for money SUV? Should we wait for the Hyundai Tucson and Nissan X-Trail? Will Nissan bring down the price of its X-Trail seeing the competition given by the Tucson? And when can we expect the launch of the two vehicles?

We think you are right, the Endeavour makes a sensible, if not better, buy. The Terracan is capable alright and has sterling performance going for it, but is way too expensive. The Ford is big, not very powerful, but quite capable for the kind of driving you will be attempting.

The Hyundai Tucson and Nissan X-Trail are yet to reach the market officially and we do hope Nissan brings the price of their exceptionally good X-Trail down seeing the sticker price of the Tucson, which is expected to be around Rs 12 lakh. Have a good time and our regards to your dad!

First bet

I want to buy my first car. Ideally, my budget (I will get the car financed) will be between Rs 3 and4 lakh. However, it may stretch to Rs 5 lakh. I shall be driving about 80 km daily, in the city, and on the highways about 3 to 4 times a month. Low maintenance and high mileage (i.e. low monthly running costs) are essential, as are air-conditioning and driving comfort and pleasure. I am yet to test drive any cars, but I am interested mainly in the Ford Ikon, Tata Indigo and Santro Xing.

A Santro Xing that suits your budget is all the first car that you will ever need. So walk cross to a Hyundai dealership, have a chat with the sales people and choose the car (make sure you get power steering and a good music system). The Santro is easy to drive, is reliable and economical and is the most recommended car in this space.
