National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) will receive the deemed university status soon. The institute is already is in process of upgrading its course curriculum from diploma to degrees. |
The institute is also planning to add two more centres in Surat in Gujarat and Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh. |

"The textile ministry will ensure that NIFT get the deemed university status soon, so that the institute can function in professional manner and the students can get degrees instead of diplomas. |

"There is strong demand from the industry to set up two new NIFT centres at Suart and Lucknow and both the centres will come up soon," Shankarsinh Vaghela, Union minister of textiles told Business Standard. |

At present, NIFT has a sub-centre at Surat, which is expected to be converted into full-fledged centre. And the new centre at Lucknow will take the number of NIFT centres to nine. Other centres are in New Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Gandhinagar and Hyderabad. |

The Hyderabad centre of NIFT has already applied for the ISO-9000 quality certification. |

All the seven diploma programmes at the NIFT, will be converted into degrees after the institute gets a deemed university status. NIFT is already in process of restructuring its course curriculum and has conducted a major re-constructing exercise. |

NIFT programmes are restructured to suit the changing business context and move towards university education. NIFT now offers four years, undergraduate and two years postgraduate programmes in the areas of design, management and technology. |

"There is a proposal of NIFT under active consideration of Government of India to obtain the status of Deemed to be University under the provision of UGC Act. In the event of this status, all the students being admitted under four year under graduate and two year post graduate programme shall be eligible to receive a bachelor and master degree in design, technology and management," said Asha Thomas, director, NIFT Gandhinagar. |

The new curriculum aims at providing university education in a 10+2+4 pattern. |
