This is a strange book, but one I must admit I couldn't put down. Filmmaker Saeed Mirza writes it as both an ode and a lament to his mother, but you can see that the voice behind the book is of a modern, rationalist Muslim in India (and even perhaps elsewhere) wanting to make sense of the madness that has seized the world. There is a skilful blending of Islamic common sense folk lore as well as great erudition with which the scientific and literary learnings of the Arab world are highlighted.

Why, Mirza asks, has the Islamic world lost these moorings, so that today any association with the religion has to do with terrorism, radicalism and fundamentalism instead of the path-breaking learning with which it was associated?

An essential read in today's chaotic world, recommended particularly for McAmericans!
