This is a strange book, but one I must admit I couldn't put down. Filmmaker Saeed Mirza writes it as both an ode and a lament to his mother, but you can see that the voice behind the book is of a modern, rationalist Muslim in India (and even perhaps elsewhere) wanting to make sense of the madness that has seized the world. There is a skilful blending of Islamic common sense folk lore as well as great erudition with which the scientific and literary learnings of the Arab world are highlighted. |
Why, Mirza asks, has the Islamic world lost these moorings, so that today any association with the religion has to do with terrorism, radicalism and fundamentalism instead of the path-breaking learning with which it was associated? |

An essential read in today's chaotic world, recommended particularly for McAmericans! |
