Men’s magazine Playboy will no longer carry photographs of naked women, The New York Times (NYT) has reported.
The NYT quotes Playboy Chief Executive Scott Flanders as saying: “You’re now one click away from every sex act imaginable for free... And so it’s just passe at this juncture.”
Cory Jones, an editor at Playboy, came up with the radical suggestion. Hugh Hefner, the founder and editor-in-chief, approved Jones’ idea. However, Playboy would continue to publish photographs of women in provocative poses.
The magazine, which is often credited with making sex ubiquitous in America, has seen its circulation drop from 5.6 million in 1975 to about 800,000 now, The New York Times writes.
Other changes, including whether or not Playboy will continue to carry a centrefold, are yet to be approved.
Flanders was also quoted as saying, “Playboy magazine’s sex columnist will be a woman who writes enthusiastically about sex.”
