by Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi as his favourite and best-read ever. |
The simplicity and stark honesty displayed in the book and his admiration for Gandhi's philosophy overshadows anything else Mathias has read till date. |
When he's not reading honest confessions and ideas etched in an autobiography, Mathias likes to stress the boot through readings that make him laugh "" especially if they are works of P G Wodehouse, Woody Allen, Erma Bombeck and his favourite, Spike Milligan. |
Among the Indian writers he expresses clear admiration for Jug Suraiya's wit and adds the names of Khushwant Singh and Vikram Seth to that list. But at the top of his list stands Gurcharan Das, especially a play script written by him called Larins Sahib. |
He does though happily strike out Salman Rushdie's name from his list because "I find his books to be just too difficult to read." |
Currently reeling under fascination and admiration for the book Maximum City, Mathias is keen to meet author Suketu Mehta...even if only to tell him the brilliance of his book, "I loved this book. I've grown up in Mumbai and the depth of research gone into this book is mindboggling. It captures Mumbai and its underworld the way no other book has," he adds. |
Though he'll happily lend books to family and friends, Mathias makes it a point to sign and date every book he buys. |
"Sometimes I buy books and forget about them only to discover them somewhere in my house many years later. Then it helps to know exactly when I'd bought them," he laughs. |
Not much of a fiction reader, most of his book reading time gets lost in keeping himself updated on world affairs through newspapers and magazines. |
With a few favourite book stores across the country, while most people spend time browsing the Internet, Mathias loves browsing at a book shop.
