The Rajasthan Tourist Development Corporation (RTDC), in collaboration with the Indian Railways, is planning to introduce yet another tourist train called the Palace on Wheels-2 in the state. |
This train would be the third tourist train after the Palace on Wheels and recently introduced meter gauge heritage tourist train Heritage on Wheels. |
With an expected cost of Rs 25 crore, the Palace on Wheels-2 would be the most expensive tourist train in the state with better comfort and luxury facilities. |
According to sources, the tourists commuting in this train would have to pay 10 per cent extra as compared to the present Palace on Wheels. |
"The Palace on Wheels-2 project is in its last stage and we are expecting the train to start by the end of next tourist season in the state. The decision to launch another tourist train is taken viewing the tremendous response received by the two earlier trains in the state," an RTDC official said. |
"The new Palace on Wheels-2 would ply on the same route as the Palace on Wheels as the demand for this route is very high round. Owing to 100 per cent occupancy of the Palace on Wheels, several of the tourists have to return due to non-availability of its tickets," he added. |
One could gauge the response for the Palace on Wheels by the fact that tourists have booked 70 per cent of the seats up to 2011. The train would be the most luxurious and comfortable train ever launched in the state targeting high class commuters and tourists. |
Sources said journey charges in the existing Palace on Wheels were $535,385. The number of bogies in the Palace on Wheels-2 would be the same as that in the Palace on Wheels but at the same time the capacity of the Palace on Wheels-2 would be lesser than the Palace on Wheels by 24. |
The Palace on Wheels has a capacity for 104 commuters but the Palace on Wheels-2 will have a capacity of only 80 tourists. |
Sources said each cabin would entail a small suite and an attached bathroom, having all modern facilities and gadgets. |
Special sitting arrangements would be made in the cabin so that the tourists could have the magnificent view of the desert state. |
