Paul McGinley of Ireland, whose 8-foot par putt at The Belfry clinched the cup for Europe two years ago, surged into the 10th position of Ryder Cup standings with a 69 on the final day at the PGA Championship and a tie for sixth.

The timing is excellent as McGinley played on the 2002 team. The 2004 European team will only be decided in two weeks. McGinley is also exempt for the $7 million NEC Invitational, which could give him more points.

Free flight

The organisers at the 84 Lumber Classic made David Toms an offer he couldn't refuse.

While planning his PGA schedule for the remainder of the year, it looked unlikely that he would play at the Lumber Classic, which is squeezed between the Ryder Cup and a World Golf Championships in Ireland. What they offered, however, was a free flight "" one of this year's most lucrative perks.

The 84 Lumber has offered any player eligible for the American Express Championship a free, round-trip flight to Ireland on a customised 747 with only first-class seats. The players can bring their wives, caddies and three guests.

The offer is worth at least $40,000 and participants had to commit by August 4. The early commitment list has Toms, Vijay Singh, Mike Weir, Kenny Perry, Charles Howell III and Brad Faxon, none of whom played the 84 Lumber Classic last year.

On the roll

Sports agents Dave Parker ran a modest sports agency till some time ago. He had good players but no big stars, But now, Links Sports, his agency, has the most Ryder Cup players. There are three on the US team, as Parker represents David Toms, Chad Campbell and Kenny Perry.

Charity packet

The Byron Nelson Championship raised $6.09 million in net proceeds, the sixth straight year to raise at least $5 million.

All proceeds will benefit the Salesmanship Club Youth and Family Centers. It is one of the biggest charity contributions.
