This book contains the proceedings of a conference on the Indian economy organised by the Centre for Economic Development and Policy Research, Stanford University in May 2000. Anne Krueger, currently the First Deputy Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund, was director of the Centre at the time.

The conference series continued in 2001 and 2002; no doubt the proceedings of these events will also be published in due course. The NRI infotech barons were apparently a major inspiration and source of financial support for the event. Well-known people like Kanwal Rekhi and K. B. Chandrashekhar participated. From the Indian side, there were a whole host of eminences, from the then finance minister to virtually all the prominent economic policy makers.
