He even went to the extent of suggesting that men's tours should consider changing their bylaws to prevent women from receiving sponsor's exemptions. |
Norman's comments came three weeks after 14-year-old Michelle Wie missed the cut by a stroke in the Sony Open, a stunning effort that prompted seven other PGA Tour events to offer her exemptions. |
Last year, Annika Sorenstam became the first woman in 58 years to compete on the PGA Tour, missing the cut by five shots in the Colonial. |
"I think the rightful place is that women play on their tour and we play on ours. It all started with Annika to promote herself and promote women's golf, but at the end of the day, it can be very detrimental." |
DUVAL TIES THE KNOT |
David Duval, the last World No.1 before Tiger Woods took over that property, is getting married in March. Duval's fans hope the marriage will bring stability and improve his golf, which has suffered for the last couple of years. |
In 1999, Duval became the first player since Johnny Miller in 1974 to win four times before the Masters. Before the season ended, Duval would ascend to No. 1 in the Official World Golf Rankings. But in 2000, he missed 10 weeks with a back injury and won just once. |
In 2001, he was hit by wrist injury, but recovered to capture his first and only major, The Open Championship at Royal Lytham & St. Annes. In 2002, Duval broke up with his long-time girlfriend, and in 2003, the back problems returned. He made just four cuts in 20 starts. |
RETURN OF TIGER |
Tiger Woods returns to competition next week at the Buick Invitational near San Diego, which he won last year. In 2003, it was his first tournament back after the knee surgery. |
The event this year will be at Torrey Pines, a course very familiar for Tiger. The North Course has, however, been lengthened to about 7,500 yards and is much more difficult than it used to be. |
Tiger is also slated to play the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship at La Costa Country Club, where again he will be the defending champion. Bogeyman |
