A new Expedia survey reveals how Indians are increasingly using their smartphones, tablets and other mobile gear for organising their travel plans. What's more, they cannot do without these gadgets while on vacation

TECH SAVVY

* 18% Indian travellers among the respondents use and own a smartwatch, the highest globally

* 6% Own Google Glass, making them the second highest in this category after South Korea

HOOKED TO GADGETS

* 95% Indian travellers say that their smartphone is of critical importance to them, 90% say the same about laptops and 66% consider their tablets as critically important

TRAVELLING WITHOUT GADGETS? NO WAY!

* 88% Indian travellers have at least one mobile device, saying they always travel with their smartphone on leisure trips, and 38% say they always travel with a tablet, making them 5th in the among global travellers who always bring their smartphone with them on leisure trips

* 47% Carry laptops with them on leisure trips, the second highest globally after UAE (48%)

* 74% Carry a laptop on work trips, second highest in the world after Mexico (79%)

MOBILE DEVICES - FOR FOOD, TRAVEL, ENTERTAINMENT…

* 61% Indian travellers say they use their mobile devices for navigation when travelling, which is the highest number in the world

* 35% Use their mobile device for entertainment (games, music, movies, TV shows) when travelling, putting them in the top four in this category after UAE (42%), Thailand (41%) and Brazil (39%)

* 31% Use their mobile device for travel assistance, translation, currency conversion, travel guides when travelling, ranking them third in the world after Singapore (33%) and Hong Kong (32%)

* 22% Travellers from UAE, Ireland, Mexico and India read e-books/ magazines on their mobile devices when travelling, far higher than travellers from other regions

THE HORRIFYING THOUGHT OF LOSING DEVICES

* 34% Indian travellers say that they would be most anxious about losing their mobile device, more anxious than travellers from other countries

* 43% Say they would feel insecure, isolated or ship-wrecked if their mobile device was lost or stolen while travelling, a feeling surpassed only by travellers in South Korea (47%)

* 35% Indian travellers, after Brazil (41%), are most likely to say losing their mobile while on vacation would make them feel anxious because all their apps and social networks are on it

PREPARED FOR POWER FAILURE

* 28% Indian travellers, keep a power cord with them at all times to be used in case of dead battery. They come a close second to UAE (29%)

INDIANS LOVE FREE THINGS, INCLUDING WI-FI

* 62% Indian travellers say, Wi-Fi availability or pricing (like free Wi-Fi versus not having to pay for Wi-Fi) impacts their purchase decisions when searching for and booking flights or hotels

* 43% Say complimentary Wi-Fi in guest rooms and public areas is very important when they book a hotel for personal travel

INFORMATION INDIANS WANT FROM TRAVEL APPS WHEN ON BUSINESS TRIPS

* 63% Indian travellers feel it is most essential for a travel app to provide maps and directions

* 61% Say that for a travel app to make the cut, it should automatically update their itinerary

* 39% Place importance on automatic updates to travel manager, more than travellers from other countries

* 52% Need the ability to check into a flight through the app

* 52% Can't do without location of local services / amenities in a travel app
