A highway advisory system (HAS) was launched as a pilot project on the Delhi-Jaipur highway (NH-8) in New Delhi by road transport and highways minister Nitin Gadkari on Thursday.

HAS is  a free-to-air information distribution system that uses radio to make the travelling experience on National Highways safer, faster and hassle-free.

Under the project real time highway information will be gathered from concessionaires, patrol vehicles, toll plazas and traffic marshals and transmitted to the HAS control centre using mobile applications, telephones and  sensors.

The centre will collect data, process and analyse it, generate alerts and get it broadcast on All India Radio. Information and alerts will be broadcast over AIR’s Delhi, Alwar and Jaipur FM stations. Every day, 22 bulletins will be issued, including safety awareness content along with live traffic updates on NH8.

According to Gadkari, the government is committed to reduce fatality due to road accidents by 50 percent.  HAS is an aid that will help to achieve this target. By giving information about traffic conditions on the highway, accidents,  weather and meteorological information and on highway amenities, the system will help reduce road accidents and also fatalities, besides making  travel faster and more convenient.
