Japanese auto major Nissan is the latest carmaker to hike the price of its models following the imposition of a new cess by the government in the budget presented by finance minister Arun Jaitley last week.
A Nissan India spokesperson said the company had raised prices in the range of one and 3.5 per cent because of new levies imposed by the government. Datsun models would become dearer by one per cent, whereas its diesel vehicles incuding the Terrano and Sunny would cost between 3.25 per cent and 3.5 per cent more.
Nissan's range in India include the Datsun Go, the entry-level Micra Active, besides the SUV Terrano and the MUV Datsun Go Plus.
All leading automakers including Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors, Mahindra, Hyundai, Honda and even luxury carmaker Mercedes-Benz have hiked the price of their vehicles.
In his budget, Jaitley announced the imposition of a 2.5 per cent cess on diesel vehicles of length not exceeding 4 m and engine capacity not exceeding 1,500 cc while higher engine capacity and SUVs and bigger sedans attract a cess of 4 per cent on the value of the car.
Petrol/LPG/CNG vehicles not exceeding 4 m and engine capacity not exceeding 1,200 cc will attract a cess of 1 per cent.
