While carmakers around the globe are eagerly joining the autonomous (or driverless) vehicles bandwagon, one leading carmaker does not want to have anything to do with it.
Iconic automaker Porsche is not planning to go the driverless way. “One wants to drive a Porsche by oneself,” quipped Oliver Blume, CEO, Porsche. “An iPhone belongs in your pocket, not on the road.”
But the company, a division of the Volkswagen Group, is working on hybrid versions of its range of cars. The German sports luxury cars offers a wide range of models in India including the iconic 911, Boxster, Cayman, Macan, Cayenne and Panamera.
Group company Lamborghini has also indicated that it is not interested in incorporating autonomous features in its vehicles. CEO Stephan Winkelmann said recently that its customers were willing to drive the luxury cars.
Jaguar Land Rover is also not keen on autonomous vehicles; its R&D head was quoted as saying that it did not consider customers as cargo.
