The Indian auto industry has to tap the huge outsourcing potential in the automotive sector in the coming years, through an efficient and effective supply chain.

Suresh Krishna, chairman and managing director of Sundram Fasteners Ltd, said that the Indian auto industry should develop the knowledge-based supply chain excellence to succeed in the stiff competition that exists in the global auto market.

He was speaking at the Auto SCM India 2004 " The Indian Automotive Supply Chain Conference being organised by the CII and CII Institute of Logistics.

Krishna insisted that the Indian industry should also outsource their non-core activities to the third party logistics providers who are experts in that domain, he said, adding that this was not only a cost-effective strategy but also reduces the company's burden so that it could concentrate more on its core activities.

N Kumar, chairman of CII Institute of Logistics, in his special address said that the CII Logistics Institute, through its range of activities and services in education and training, information & knowledge and consultancy and research, aims to create a vibrant logistics community in India.

Kumar said that in India logistics cost is 13 per cent of GDP as compared to an average of eight to nine per cent in the developed countries. Therefore, the potential savings for India if the logistics costs decrease by even 1 per cent is approximately $4.8 billion per year.

M Lakshminarayan, chairman of Auto SCM India 2004, in his address said that the Indian automotive industry is in the midst of a major transformation.

The emergence of globalisation has brought in many new challenges for enterprises. In the global environment, the customer has varied choice for the product, which he can buy at competitive prices.

It is, therefore, necessary for the organisation to evolve strategies to meet the customer's expectation and at the same time improve competitiveness and hence the focus has shifted to supply chain management as a relatively unexploited competitive resource.
