Videocon is keen to get into mobile handset manufacturing and plans to start production at its new plant at Kashipur in Uttaranchal. Last month, it was reported that the company was keen to acquire the handset business of Motorola, which is planning to separate its mobiles business from other operations.
Motorola has a 15 per cent share of the global handset market and analysts value the handset business at $3.8 billion (about Rs 1,500 crore).
Videocon has said it will roll out its telecom network from mid-August and it is targeting a 10 per cent market share in five years.
The company plans to also launch 3G services. "With our technical tie-up with various companies it would be very easy for us to roll out 3G also as soon as the government announces its policy for this area," Dhoot said.
