A-I Refuses To Accept Union

The Air-India management decided to continue to derecognise the Indian Pilots Guild, despite the Air-India pilots' stir being withdrawn on Thursday. The management also said the disciplinary proceedings against the 45 suspended pilots would continue.

Justice M N Gokhale and Justice D G Deshpande, at a hearing of the petition filed by the guild and 24 suspended pilots, said on June 16, the court would decide on whether their suspension was per se, illegal.

Meanwhile, all the agitating pilots and the suspended pilots were asked to resume duty. The agitating members will be answerable to the Air-India management on the issue of their refusal to fly.

The court also said departmental inquiry would continue. Meanwhile, the Air India management, as well as the civil aviation ministry, would not have any dialogue with the derecognised guild.

According to the national airline, over 100 pilots reported for duty, having signed an undertaking that they would fly, irrespective of the directives of the guild.

Vikrant Sansare, general secretary of the guild, said the pilots who have decided to join back are being made to sign an apology letter and a written undertaking is being taken to the effect that they would not join the union again.

Meanwhile, Air-India would take at least a week to resume its original flight schedule. Air-India pilots had called off their agitation on the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (Sars) issue.

Following talks with Union Labour Minister Sahib Singh Verma in Delhi late on Thursday night, and decided to return to duty immediately, ending the week-long stir.
