An abandoned tubewell transformed into a luxurious revolving restaurant! At Chhohal in Hoshiarpur near here, NRI Rajinder Kumar has done just that, inspired by the Rock Garden of Chandigarh, made largely of waste material.

"I was excited when I thought of using decaying tubewell pipes for making a restaurant," said 51-year-old Rajinder Kumar, who came from Dubai to look after his 3-acre land at Chhohal two years ago.

He said constructing the entire three-storeyed structure with iron was his idea. While the top floor rotates on the revolving floor plate, the first and second floors remain stationary, according to him.

"It was remarkable that he based a three-floor revolving structure on 11 iron pipes, which were corroding for some time," said Tejinder Arshi, Kumar's friend. "First we ridiculed the idea, but now we are all praise for his ingenuity," he added.

Equipped with a 360-degree viewing deck, the restaurant is a tourist attraction and offers a clear view of the foothills of Chhohal. Kumar said the revolving restaurant was an American idea that gained worldwide currency.

He said John Graham, a Seattle-based architect, built the first revolving restaurant, the La Ronde, atop an office building at the Ala Moana Shopping Centre in Honolulu in 1961.

With space for 45 people to sit, the revolving top floor takes 20 minutes to complete a circle and is fitted with two air-conditioners and the bottom structures house a waiting hall and canteen.

Kumar's wife Paramjit Kaur said: "He decided not to take assistance from any professional and the entire family worked for the construction of the restaurant for one year.," she said.

Visitor Satpal Gupta said people liked to spend maximum time at greater heights and the restaurant gave one a feeling of "being in the clouds".

He visits the place every 15 days with family, each time going back with a feeling of relief.

The idea of a revolving restaurant was ambiguous for me but the result was surprising and astounding. We are booking orders for parties on the top floor, 30 feet high, and the response so far is okay.
