Mumbai-based ship maker ABG Shipyard is planning to set up an international ship-building engineering institute in Gujarat. The company is in the process of finalising the master plan for the proposed institute.

ABG Shipyard Managing Director Rishi Agarwal, says: "We will be offering four-year diploma courses in ship-building and port-management." "Currently, we are scouting for a suitable person to head the proposed facility. We will finalise the course materials, contents, nature, fees and other formalities according to the Master Plan," he adds.

ABG Shipyard is currently examining three locations for proposed plan including Surat, Baroda and Dahej. "India is witnessing improvement in labour productivity as private sector yards begin to dominate. There is a need for further reform. There are huge plans for new shipyard, still there is room for other group to build ships in the country," he says.

Meanwhile, another Mumbai-based ship maker Bharati Shipyard is undertaking a research project on ship design for greater efficiency and economy at IIT Kharagpur. This project is in partnership with Goa Shipyard and Indian Register of Shipping. Last year, Bharati Shipyard had participated in a joint industry project 'Safe Tug' initiated by MARIN, Netherlands.

According to industry analysts, India's share in world ship-building activities is just 0.45 per cent. "But the scene would not be same in coming days for two reasons. More than 56 per cent of the ships are to be scrapped in next five years and more corporate houses are venturing into ship-building in India," they said.

How lucrative and sustainable is this career? Lloyds Register Marine Business Manager and South Asia Country Manager Andy Easdown, says: "India will require large pool of well-qualified and skilled people. Shipping companies are going in for a massive expansion with confirmed orders of 190 million gross tonne."
