The Adani group has embarked on a major plan for creating a compressed natural gas (CNG) and piped natural gas (PNG) network across the northern part of the country.

The group plans to invest around Rs 500 crore in the first phase covering Haryana and Uttar Pradesh over four-five years. Similar plans are afoot for covering Rajasthan too. Adani is already well-entrenched in Gujarat with gas supply mandate for two cities- Ahmedabad and Baroda.

Gujarat Adani Energy Ltd (GAEL), the group's CNG and PNG business arm, is investing Rs 300 crore in creation of CNG network in Noida and PNG network in Khurja in UP.

In Haryana, GAEL is creating a CNG network in Faridabad. It is further eyeing three more cities- Kanpur, Bareilly and Luknow in UP and hopes to get clearance for these cities by the weekend. It plans to invest an additional Rs 200 crore in the three cities over a period of three-five years.

Rajeev Sharma, president, Adani Group (gas business), told Business Standard that Khurja is a well-known centre for pottery and the group is targetting industrial and domestic clients for piped natural gas there.

In case of the other three centres in UP, the company will be creating a CNG network. for which it is competing against a GAIL and BPCL joint venture.

The bids for these three cities will be finalised this week.

The group has set up two separate subsidiaries for its UP and Haryana business -Adani Energy UP Ltd and Adani Energy Haryana Ltd. Sharma said Adani Energy has also bid for CNG projects in Rajasthan. It is competing with 15 bidders for projects in Kota, Jaipur and Alwar.

A tough terrain and lack of pipeline network will increase the cost of projects in Rajasthan, but the group is ready to make these investments for future, Sharma said.

To source natural gas for its UP and Haryana projects, the group will source gas from Hazira-Bijapur-Jagdishpur (HBJ) supply line of Gail. Initially, Adani has estimated a requirement of 25,000 scm/day, which will scale up to as high as 50,000 scm/day.
