The Ahmedabad-based Adani Wilmar Ltd has chalked out a massive expansion plan, aiming to increase the number of retail outlets selling the Fortune brand of edible oil by 50 per cent in the coming months. |
After purchasing two oil processing units recently in Andhra Pradesh and Rajasthan, Adani Wilmar will increase its retail outlets from the existing three lakh to about 4.50 lakh during the fiscal year. |

"This month alone, Adani Wilmar will increase the number of its stock points to 11 in south India, where there are just two at present. The company will now have stock points at Hyderababd, Karnul, Vijaywada, Vishakapatanam, Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, Hubli, Bangalore, Gulbarga and Kochi in south India," said Angshu Mallick, general manager, marketing and sales, Adani Wilmar. |

He sais with two more stock points in Goa which will be served from the Andhra Pradesh unit, the total stock points will increase to 13. |

Mallick said attempt are being made to have one distributor for every 25,000 people anywhere in the country. |

Citing an example, the official said last year Adani Wilmar had a distributor network of 80 in south India, which now stands at around 450. "This will be increased to about 600 by June this year," Mallick said. Even if one distributor covers 250 retail outlets a week, there will be over 1.20 lakh outlets in the south alone. |

"This will mean that Adani Wilmar will increase the number of retail outlets by around ten times in south India," he said. |

According to an ORG Marg survey for the period April 2003-June 2003, there were 5.80 lakh retail outlets in India that sold edible refined oil. With Adani Wilmar aiming to have a presence in as many as 4.50 retail outlets, the company aims to retain its position as the largest selling edible oil brand in the country. |

Mallick said in addition to the existing three lakh outlets, about 1.25 lakh will be added in the south, while over a lakh outlets will be added in other parts of the country, mainly in Rajasthan and surrounding states. |

Market research agency A C Nielson, in its Audit 2003 report, has said Adani Wilmar is the fastest growing FMCG company, recording a growth of 93 per cent in 2003. |

The report said Adani Wilmar retains its position as the market leader in the edible oil brands with a 19 per cent share. |

Adani Wilmar is a 50:50 joint venture between Adani Exports Ltd and Wilmar Trading Ltd, formed in January 1999. |

Adani Wilmar range of products, sold under the Fortune brand name, include refined soyabean oil, refined sunflower oil, 'Kachi Ghani' mustard oil, refined cottonseed oil, refined groundnut oil and soya palm blended oil. |

Other products under the Raag brand include refined palmolien blended oil and Vanaspati. |

Posting a turnover of Rs 970 crore in the past fiscal, Adani Wilmar Ltd has set targets of a sales turnover of Rs 1,600 crore by the end of the current fiscal year, with the help of the retail and distributor network expansion, Mallick said. |
