Afcons bags Rs 2,598 cr Chennai Metro Project

In an integrated joint venture with the Russian giant Transtonnelstroy Limited, Afcons Infrastructure Limited, a group company of Shapoorji Pallonji, has successively secured two metro projects in Chennai, amounting to Rs 2,598 crore.

The two project contracts — UAA01 and UAA05 - with value of Rs 1,567 crore and Rs 1,031 crore respectively, lies in 1 and 2 corridors of Chennai Metro Project, covering respective lengths from Washermenpet to Egmore station and from Shenoy Nagar to Thiurmangalam station. With 5 & 4 underground stations for UAA01 & UAA05 respectively, the length of twin tunnel with TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine) technique for UAA01 & UAA05 is 5.5 km & 3.1 km respectively.

These projects are part of the tenders floated by the Chennai Metro Rail Limited for design and construction of underground stations and associated tunnels covering a total length of 8.6 Kms and 9 underground stations. The construction works are likely to take off by mid-February 2011 and will be completed by end of April, 2015.

Chennai Metro Project is a rapid transit rail system to be implemented in phase manner. The phase 1 consists of two Corridors under construction. Corridor 1 is from Meddavaram to St. Thomas Mount and Corridor 2 is from Madhavaram to Lighthouse via Radhakrishnan Salai. About 55 per cent of corridors in Phase 1 are underground and balance is elevated.
