As Coal India Limited (CIL) has objected to the proposed 1,980 MW super thermal power project of National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) on coal-bearing site at Tandwa in Chatra district of Jharkhand, the power major is in search of an alternate site.
The Tandwa site was chosen after it received the CIL’s board approval and the environment and forest clearances from the Centre.
Foundation stone for the project was laid in 1999 by the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. In September 2001, former Union power minister Suresh Prabhu laid another foundation stone for construction of a planning building for the project.
A high-level team from NTPC led by its chairman RS Sharma visited some sites in Jharkhand to shift the existing site.
KK Sharma, executive director (coal mining & coal washery), NTPC, told Business Standard that in no case NTPC would shift its project outside Jharkhand. A new site would be identified in Jharkhand soon in consultation with CIL management for the power station.
