After revenues, Reliance Retail is now biggest in categories too

The company added 930 stores and 0.9 million square feet of operating space in the year across sectors

Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Retail has in 2014-15 improved profits over two times and increased its revenues by 21 per cent.

It also became the biggest in terms of number of stores in almost all categories.

It is already the biggest retail chain in terms of revenue. The profit before depreciation interest and taxes (PBDIT) was Rs 784 crore, from Rs 363 crore in 2013-14. Rrevenues went up 21.2 per cent to Rs 17,640 crore.

The company added 930 stores and 0.9 million sq ft of operating space in the year across the sectors. As on March 31, it operated 2,621 stores across 200 cities, with 12.5 mn sq ft space.

Reliance Retail’s various formats posted like to like growth — meaning, from stores in operation for more than a year — of up to 17 per cent.

Reliance Digital has become the largest consumer durables and electronics retail chain in the country, with 1,000 stores. Tata-owned Croma runs 97 stores, while Videocon’s durables chain, Next, owns about 800 stores.

Digital Xpress Mini become the largest mobile phone retail chain in the country, said Reliance, with about 800 stores. With 43 stores, Reliance Market, the cash and carry format of Reliance Retail, is the biggest in the segment. US-based Walmart  runs 21 stores and Germany's Metro 17 wholesale ones.

Reliance Market partners with kiranas, hotels, and small enterprise, with 1.5 mn registered members.

Reliance is also the biggest in department stores. The  200 stores of Reliance Trends sell 150,000 garments daily, making it the largest fashion destination in the country. Its footwear chain, Reliance Footprint, operates 200 stores across 100 cities.
