After Google books and Nexus 7 tabs, Google has now brought Google Play Movies to India. This has been launched in India and Mexico, simultaneously.

Google Play Movies allows users to buy and stream popular films and television shows which can be downloaded in the high definition (HD) or standard versions, depending on compatibility of the device.

While the Play store has some good collection of popular Hollywood movies such as The Amazing Spiderman, Premium Rush, the number of Bollywood movies that are available in the store now are quite limited. Besides, the pricing at which the movies can be rented or purchased are not something which will encourage most of the Indian movie buffs.

For example, a more recent movie like Ek Tha Tiger is available for Rs 390 (purchase) and Rs 100 (rent) while older movies like Veer-Zaara and Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge are available on rent at Rs 75 each. Whether at this kind of price point Google Play Movies will be able to make a mark among the Indian users is something needs to be seen.

This is especially since the pirated movies market is quite strong in India.

“No one would likely to watch movie by paying on internet. They are always available free of cost on number of internet sites and torrents. If Google makes it free, then only can be popular somehow,” a user comment posted in Google Play in India, says.
Besides, the bandwidth cost in India is still high and including that cost, it makes the service not so appealing, says an industry expert.
