Air France plans to cut around 1,500 jobs through a voluntary departure plan made necessary by the global economic downturn, the airline said today.

The cuts are aimed mainly in the airline's air freight business, which is "very affected by the sharp decline in global trade", Air France said in a statement.

Air France will present details of the plan to employee representatives at a meeting scheduled for October 21, the company said. Air France employed 57,000 people at the end of last year.

The airline said it will be reducing cargo capacity by 15 per cent and its passenger capacity by 5 per cent in response to falling demand.
