India’s leading telecom major Bharti Airtel on October 25 launched Voice over Long Term Evolution (VoLTE) services across Gujarat. Gujarat is the fifth state after Maharashtra, Goa, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh to roll out VoLTE services, which works over Airtel’s 4G LTE network.

The VoLTE services allow customers to make high definition (HD) voice calls using data bandwidth and, therefore, the call connects faster and its call drop rate is not very hight.

Airtel VoLTE will be available only on 4G LTE enabled mobile devices with the Airtel 4G SIM. The company has made no changes in the tariff plans and the customers will be charged based on their base tariff plan for the calls over VoLTE. Also, in limited or no 4G network areas, the user will be able to make normal calls using 3G and 2G networks. This gives Airtel an edge over competitors to use its existing 3G and 2G services.

Airtel VoLTE also allows users to access the internet even while they are on a call. The feature is not available on 3G and 2G networks and, therefore, allows users to stay connected on the go.

“It is our constant endeavor to offer world-class services to our customers with an aim to enhance their mobile experience. In line with this, we are delighted to launch our VoLTE services across the State enabling customers to enjoy superior quality voice calls. In conjunction with our robust 4G network in Gujarat, VoLTE will enable customers to make the most of their mobile devices and experience advanced technologies,” said Murthy Chaganti, Chief Executive Officer – Gujarat, Bharti Airtel.

Here are the steps to enable Airtel VoLTE services:
  • First check mobile device compatibility to check if your device supports Airtel VoLTE. The list of compatible device can be found here
  • Check you SIM card and ensure that you have an Airtel 4G SIM. If not, swap your old SIM with a new 4G-enabled SIM by visiting the nearest Airtel store.
  • Verify that the VoLTE voice-calling feature has been enabled on your smartphone:
  • For iOS: Go to settings - Mobile Data - Mobile Data Options – Enable 4G – Turn on Voice and Data For Android: Settings - Mobile Network - Turn on VoLTE call
  • In dual SIM phones, the Airtel SIM card should be inserted in a slot compatible with network mode as “4G/3G/2G (Auto)”.
  • Follow these steps to enable the same – Settings - Sim networks - Preferred network type - 4G/3G/2G
