Rail transport major Alstom has bagged the contract for manufacturing and supplying signalling equipment for phase two of the Delhi Metro project.

The Rs 255 crore project involves design, manufacturing, supply, installation and commissioning of train control and signalling system for extensions of lines one and two of Delhi Metro. Line one is the Rithala-Shahdara stretch, which would extend till Dilshad Garden in the second phase. The second line is Vishwavidyalaya-Central Secretariat stretch, which will go upto Sushant Lok in Gurgaon.

The Alstom-led consortium consisted of Alstom Projects India Ltd, Alstom Transport SA and Sumitomo Corporation.

The company bagged the project on Tuesday that also coincided with the first ever visit of Alstom vice president, Philippe Mellier to India. Alstom provided the signalling knowhow to DMRC even during the first phase of the Delhi metro projectin 2005.

Alstom is now eyeing bigger projects in India, especially the dedicated freight corridor project, which would involve laying of around 10,000 km of new lines.

Alstom India country president, Sunand Sharma told Business Standard that preliminary discussions have been held with railway ministry officials on the company's involvement in the project. He said that once the work on laying of lines under the project begins, Alstom would definitely be one of the bidders for providing signalling equipments and coaches.

Alstom has also been shortlisted along with Siemens and Bombardier, to provide coaches for the Versova-Ghatkopar line, which is the first line of the Mumbai Metro being developed by Reliance Energy (REL).

REL is planning to invite techno-commercial bids from these players. Alstom officials said that they are also planning to participate in the Hyderabad Metro rail project.
