The aluminium, alumina and bauxite industry must focus on innovative measures to come out of the global recession.
For this, the industries should focus on the optimum use of the capacity, effective utilisation of manpower and raw-materials, adoption of innovative marketing strategy, waste utilisation and use of modern technology in the production process.
Such important indices need to be looked at with seriousness for reviving the growth in the sector, says C R Pradhan, chairman-cum- managing director of (CMD) of National Aluminium Company Limited (Nalco).
Addressing the participants of the 10th International Congress of the International Committee for the study of Bauxite, Alumina and Aluminium (ICSOBA)-2008 at Bhubaneswar, Pradhan said, the industry is facing an unprecedented global economic crisis.
Under such a situation, the global community must relook at the entire scenario and offer its considered opinion, he added.
Speaking on the occasion Dimitri Contaroudas, president, ICSOBA-2008 said, India’s high GDP growth in last few years provided unlimited opportunities for growth of bauxite, alumina, aluminium industries and the aluminium downstream industries.

The fast growth around the world has shown deceleration due to global credit crunch and financial meltdown. However, he hoped that these industries will flourish only after the market improves. Stating that the directorate of ICSOBA will be shifted from Budapest in Hungary to Nagpur in India, Contaroudas said, necessary amendments will be moved in this regard. This historical move will help to strengthen the organisation, he added.
A K Nandi, convener of ICSOBA-2008 said, in view of a number of greenfield and brownfield projects coming up in Asia and Australia, it was considered appropriate to have the 10th International Congress in Bhubaneswar. Bhubaneswar, the capital city of Orissa was chosen due to the location of a large bauxite reserve and greenfield bauxite-alumina-aluminium projects in Orissa. The theme of the congress is ‘Bauxite, alumina and aluminium industry of Austral-Asia and new technological advances”. About 150 participants from 7 countries are participating in the three daylong event. They include international experts, scientists, engineers, technologist, entrepreneurs and equipment producers in the fiels of bauxite, alumina, aluminium and downstream industries.
