E-commerce marketplace major, Amazon Inc, today commenced work on its 10-acre campus at Gachibowli in Hyderabad.

The new campus, touted as the biggest campus for Amazon in India, as well as its largest outside its home turf -- the US, is expected to be ready in 2019, and would house thousands of employees managing backend operations for its various global business and technology teams.

This marks Amazon's second significant investment in Telangana within a year. Last year, Amazon had announced the launch of one of its biggest fulfilment centres in the country in Hyderabad.

Amazon, which established its backend operations in Hyderabad in 2005-06, had in 2015 inaugurated its first Fulfilment Centre in Telangana, on the outskirts of Hyderabad.

The Telangana fulfilment centre, spread over 280,000 sft, is one Amazon's biggest fulfilment in India, helping SMEs in the state service their customers across the country.

Laying the foundation for Amazon's campus, state IT, panchayat raj, urban development and municipal administration minister, K T Rama Rao, said the new facility promised to add thousands of jobs and provide a fillip to the local economy.

"We will continue to make all efforts to make Telangana an investor-friendly state and help companies like Amazon expand their presence in the region," he said.

According to David Zapolsky, senior vice president (general counsel legal), Amazon, Telangana had been home to Amazon's IT operations since 2005-06 and its presence in the state had grown multifold since then.

"With a pool of quality talent, state-of-the-art infrastructure and a progressive government, the state was a natural choice for us to set up our largest campus in India here. We are very excited with the growth momentum that we have been witnessing for our India business. For Amazon, India continues to be one of our highest priority investments and we plan to invest with a long-term focus," he said.
