Confirming the development, Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation chairman R S Sodhi said, “We have already raised our procurement prices by Rs 3 per litre in the recent months, and the inputs costs for cattle-feed, dry fodder and green fodder have increased. Usually, prices go up by 7-8 per cent per year. However, this time there has been a long period of stable prices.”
He added that prices would go up in Ahmedabad and Saurashtra region.
Post the price rise, the prices of Amul Gold (full cream) would be Rs 48 a litre, while that of Amul Taaza (toned) would be Rs 36 a litre. Rates of Amul Shakti (standard) would be Rs 44 a litre and Amul Slim-n-Trim (doubled-toned) would be Rs 34 a litre.
Amul had last raised prices in May 2014.
The dairy industry in India has witnessed a long period of stable milk prices primarily on account of weak global prices of skimmed milk powder (SMP) and huge inventory of SMP back home due to lack of export opportunity.
Usually milk procurement drops during the lean summer months and prices go up. Amul had said earlier that it would review the pricing situation in June.
Sodhi informed that procurement is up by around 9 per cent compared to last year, and is around 14.8 million litres per day.
