After the expiry of the sunset clause for companies operating out of Software Technology Parks of India (STPI), Andhra Pradesh STPI has decided not to publish the software exports figures henceforth.

Software Technology Parks of India in Andhra Pradesh has decided not to publish the software exports figures from various STPI units for FY12. However, the department official said it has given the software exports data to the state government.

“With the roll back of sunset clause for companies operating in the STPI units, new companies are preferring to operate out of Special Economic Zones. The SEZ comes under the Ministry of Commerce and file separate exports data to them while we file data to the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology,” P Venugopal, STPI Director, Hyderabad told Business Standard.

STPI units in Andhra Pradesh house around 1,100 companies and the state accounts for about 15% of the national IT exports.

“As there are two separate figures for exports from the state, there is a confusion with regard to the overall numbers. So we have decided not to publish it separately, but will hand over the data to the state government. The government can collate data from SEZ and STPI and give the exports figure," he added.

Karnataka which contributes around 35% to the overall IT exports from India has also not come out with the exports figures.

When contacted an official in STPI, Bangalore said, “We have not published the figure for the FY12 as we are yet to receive some more data.”

The government had decided to end the sunset clause in STPI scheme from Marach 31, 2011 which gave tax exemption on profits to IT/ITES units. The STPI scheme, was launched in 1991 acted as enablers in providing services to various SMEs.

The government's move to end the tax incentives to STPI units have impacted the small and medium businesses.
