Power requirement for Andhra Pradesh would reach 18,500 Mw, from the current 14,700 Mw, by 2015, said Andhra Pradesh Power Generation Corporation (APGenco) joint managing director D Prabhakar Rao, quoting a Central Electricity Authority (CEA) report.

The power sector is incurring losses on account of low tariffs, increasing input cost and unavailability of skilled manpower. Manpower costs have tripled, while power cost has increased only by 10-15 per cent. “Rationality in tariff-making with due concern to equity could help,” said TL Sankar, advisor and project leader (energy sector), Administrative Staff College of India.

According to Sujeet Kishen, executive director, Ernst and Young India, capacity addition of power generation in the public power sector was expected to be 62,000 Mw during the eleventh plan period (2007-2012), lower than the projected target of 78,000 Mw. “However, capacity addition in the private sector is expected to exceed the set target, which will have a positive impact on power sector,” he said.
