The Apollo Hospitals group, which has the largest private healthcare network in the country, has entered into a tie-up with Johns Hopkins Medicine International of the US for developing concepts, technology, tests and operating systems in healthcare services, clinical research and medical education.

Prathap C Reddy, chairman, Apollo Hospitals, who was part of the core team that visited the US along with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh recently, and Steven J Thompson, chief executive officer, Johns Hopkins, signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to this effect at Baltimore in Maryland.

As per the pact, the areas of collaboration between the two healthcare majors include continuing medical education programmes, nurse education, telemedicine, second opinion services, partnerships with clinical departments and participation in clinical trials.

The Apollo Hospitals Group is an integrated healthcare provider which manages over 6,500 beds across countries in Asia.

With regard to administrative and consultancy partnerships, "definitive agreements with financial frameworks will be discussed and concluded in the next 90 days", said Reddy.

Commenting on the tie-up, Alexander Kuruvilla, CEO, Apollo Hospitals, Ahmedabad, said John Hopkins Medicine is the world leader in the education of physicians and medical scientists, in biomedical research and in the application of medical knowledge.

"As this association will make the best kind of knowledge and services available to us, our patrons can now be all the more confident that their health and life is secure in our hands," he said.
