Denim major Arvind Mills is setting up a state-of-the-art design centre in New York, targeting the premium US customers. Christened Arvind Design Lab, the new centre will be opened in two months.

"We have been a leading supplier of textiles to the US market for several years. Almost 40 per cent of our export finds its way to this market. Moreover, in today's market, design innovation, speed-to-market and responsiveness are critical. The Lab will meet these needs," said Jayesh Shah, director, CFO.

The company has roped in veteran textile designer Tony Carnot to head the Lab. "Carnot is a former vice-president of the US-based Swift Denim and has worked with many mills in the country and Europe," said Shah.

"Our vision is to create a unique denim environment where designers are welcome to hang out, gather global trend information and be inspired. India has an incredible textile heritage and an intrinsic appreciation of fine craftsmanship and artisan skills. It's where indigo was first used as a dye. We want to share this heritage with our customers," said Carnot.

The team has other two American professionals - Josette Sloss as the denim sales manager and Chiara Sullivan, who will take care of merchandising.

"Till now we had designers working From Italy, the US and Japan. But this is the first time we are setting up a lab overseas. It will serve as a creative design centre and showroom, providing customers with trends and inspiration from India and from around the world," said Shah.

Arvind Mills is also regrouping its sales team for the US market. Raju Shah will head gabardine sales and the company's growing garment package effort in denim.

"The Design Lab will be a showcase of all things we are capable of doing with denim - from mass products to the most amazing premium denims," said Shah.
