Consumer notebook vendor Asus, which has strengthened its presence in the Indian market with its smartphone and tablet products, is considering setting up of a manufacturing facility in India. The company see a potential for growth in sales of its products in the country, which could be supported by a local manufacturing base, if there is proper support from the government, according to company officials.

The market for smartphones and tablets in the country is growing and there is an opportunity for the company's products in the market. It would be looking at establishing a manufacturing facility also in order to support the growth in sales volume, said Peter Chang, regional head - South Asia & country manager - System Business Group - ASUS India. The company is expecting to expand its presence with a total of 200 stores by the end of the year.

He said that the company would be looking at the benefits the government can offer and the duty structure, if it sets up the facility. The final decision on this has to be taken by the headquarters of the Taiwan-based company.

However, when asked about a situation where the company would look at acquiring a facility like the one of Nokia India's manufacturing unit near Chennai, he said that it has not occurred so far and one has to look at what the facility has at present.

The company today launched its ZenFone Series in Chennai. "Zenfones truly redefine the smartphone experience that the tech savvy generation in the country has ever witnessed. We would be backing this launch with our increasing presence in the Indian market to match up to the demand and propose to expand the number of stores to 200 this year." said Chang.
