Defence major BAE Systems today said it is planning to cut over 1,100 jobs across plants in the country and may shut down one of its facilities by the end of 2012.

The company has begun consultation regarding potential closure of one of its UK sites and job cuts at another three, with 1,116 jobs cuts, BAE Systems said in a statement.

Under the programme, the Woodford site in Cheshire would be closed at the end of 2012, on completion of Nimrod MRA4 production contract, resulting in 630 people losing jobs.

Moreover, 205 jobs would be lost at its Samlesbury facility in Lancashire, 170 jobs at Warton in Lancashire and 111 jobs would be slashed at Farnborough in Hampshire.

At Samlesbury the potential job losses are in manufacturing and are associated with the end of the Airbus work currently undertaken by BAE Systems for Spirit AeroSystems, the statement added.

"Whilst we regret having to make this announcement we have to ensure we are the right size and shape to remain competitive and meet our customer's requirements in the future," BAE Systems' Business Unit Military Air Solutions Managing Director Kevin Taylor said.

The company, which employs about 1,05,000 people worldwide, would work with its employees and representatives to explore ways of mitigating these potential job losses.
