Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL) will shortly begin trial exports of diesel to Myanmar. India has been keen to export diesel from Numaligarh refinery in Assam to the south east neighbour.

Senior company executives told Business Standard, that the exports would be by road through India's north east border. "We are working on the specifications for the kind of diesel required by Myanmar," said a senior official.

India is keen to export 100,000 barrels of diesel to Myanmar which has been seeking a rupee payment for such a deal. The Union finance ministry had turned down this demand.

Numaligarh refinery is owned by BPCL through a separate company Numaligarh Refinery Ltd (NRL) and has a production capacity of 3 million tonne.

"Transporting products from this refinery to this part of the country is costlier than importing to Myanmar," he said.

Myanmar imports about 4 million barrels of diesel most of which is from Malaysia. Other countries which cater to its import demands are Thailand and Singapore.

It is believed that buying diesel from India would be cheaper than importing from Malaysia. The two countries share a border of 1,640 km.

Myanmar's import bill for diesel stood at $200 million in 2003-04 and is set to increase further by $50 this year.

Myanmar has also been planning to upgrade its refinery in Than Liyn to 12,000 barrels. Indian Oil Corporation.
