The Ramachandrapuram unit of the Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) posted a turnover of Rs 6,490 crore and a profit before tax of Rs 1,525 crore for 2012-13.

Newly-appointed executive director of the unit, N Ravi Chander, said the recent global economic slowdown and the constraints being faced by the Indian power sector by way of fuel linkages, environmental issues and land clearances hampered the offtake of many major power projects.

Consequently, while some power projects were cancelled, some others were put on hold temporarily. "This has severely dented the order book of not only BHEL, but other players in the field as well," he said.

Nevertheless, he explained that the company's strategies started paying off and it was able to bag two major orders recently, facing stiff competition from both domestic and international players, including the Chinese parties.

According Ravi Chander, the Ramachandrapuram unit has been qualified by five international consultant agencies for sourcing BHEL equipment for projects dealt by them across the globe.

During the last financial year, the unit had dispatched the first 270-Mw generator and also the first lot of compressors to a power project being set up at Amaravati.
