Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL), Trichy complex reported a 124 per cent increase in profit before tax to Rs 358 crore for the financial year ending March 31, 2005 compared to Rs 160 crore last year.

BHEL, Tirchy, achieved a 59 per cent increase in its turnover at Rs 3,608 crore for the financial year 2005-06, as compared to Rs 2,273 crore registered in the previous year. Of the total turnover of BHEL, the Trichy unit contributed 25 per cent. BHEL recorded a total turnover of Rs 14,410 crore in the year 2005-06.

Addressing the media here today, V Gopalakrishnan, executive director, BHEL Trichy, said the unit could achieve this number as it enhanced the annual output by over 1 lakh tonnes to reach an all-time high of 3.20 lakh tonnes during the year. The unit also recorded a 124% increase in its profit before tax at Rs 358 crore.

Attributing the achievements to three major business strategies adopted by the unit, he said the re-structuring exercise envisaging all manufacturing shops of the boiler plant under one umbrella and combing all sub-contracting and ancillary development operations under another group " outsourcing group " delivered results in terms of improved efficiency and faster response.

Secondly, bringing about a paradigm shift in manufacturing strategy resulted in high productivity.

The third thrust, he said, was on labour relations and specific steps were taken to raise the morale of employees.

Besides, the PSU went in for fresh recruitment after a gap of 20 years and another 300- 400 freshers would be recruited in future pending sanction from the board, he added.
