A company press release said the orders have been placed by Bharathiya Rail Bijlee Company (BRBCL).
Slated for synchronisation in the Eleventh Plan the units will add 24 million units of power everyday to the grid on commissioning.
While Bhel, Tiruchirapalli, will manufacture steam generators with electrostatic precipitators, the auxiliaries and others will be made available from the Ranipet unit, the release said.
Another press release said Bhel had also bagged a Rs 1,075 crore order in the face of stiff competition for setting up a combined cycle power plant (CCPP) in Gujarat.

It said power plant major Gujarat State Energy Generation Ltd had placed an order for a 350-mw gas turbine based CCPP, to be installed at Hazira in Gujarat. The project is slated to be completed within a tight schedule of 27 months, it said.
The steam turbine generator set would be made by the Tiruchirapalli unit of Bhel, the gas turbine by the Hyderabad plant, while the electronics division of Bhel at Bangalore would produce the control systems, the release said.
